![]() ![]() Pittsburgh is kind of an urban island, with few large cities close by. I agree that Pittsburgh doesn't have nearly as much Black culture as Philly, or even nearby Cleveland, but it is still probably seen as a 'Black city' by people who live in the greater region. The Hill District is a pretty well known Black area, with some legendary music venues back in the 20s and 30s. They also have the longest tenured Black coach (Mike Tomlin) in the NFL. The Steelers seem to have pretty widespread appeal among Black people across the country.most notably Snoop Dog is huge Steeler fan. I also know they have the August Wilson African American Cultural Center in a pretty high visibility location downtown. His breakout hit song 'Black and Yellow' was an ode to Pittsburgh. Wiz Khalifa is a pretty prominent Black Pittsburgh export. ![]() I would also say Mexican and Puerto Rican immigration prevented Chicago from declining more than it actually did. Immigration is probably the main reason New York and other cities didn't completely emptied out. I wonder if Detroit and other cities would have avoided rapid decline if immigration was in full swing after white flight. The black residents couldn't do anything to stop that from happening. The inner city was literally abandoned and left to become poorer and poorer. With the bulk of the population leaving, there goes most of the tax base to maintain city services. Due to redlining and other racist policies, African Americans were also limited to neighborhoods that weren't wealthy to begin with. The black population was never going to be large enough to make up for the difference. When the white population fled Detroit, they probably left entire neighborhoods emptied out. Thus, Detroit at its peak was around 1/4 black, but now in its declined state, it has a higher black percentage but the raw numbers of black folks living there has only grown a little ( with even those numbers going down due to black flight). Now it has around 600,000 people ( correct me if I'm wrong), with the majority of that being black. For example, Detroit once had close to 2 million people when it was majority white. Companies like Amazon and Microsoft are still based in the Seattle area in the state of Washington.A lot of those "black" cities in the Rust Belt are only majority African American because most of the white population ( which made up the vast bulk of the city's original population) fled. The importance of the city and metro area is also due to fact that some of the biggest companies worldwide started in Seattle during the 1980s. Seattle has always been an important coastal seaport city and a gateway to Alaska. ![]() It has about 733,820 residents and is among the 25 largest cities in the United States. The city of Seattle is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. In 2021, the federal state of Washington was ranked 6th in terms of household income among the states of the U.S. Household income in Washington is on a similar high level. This is by far more than the average household income in the United States. However, Seattle is in fourth place among the 20 largest metro areas in terms of household income, which stood at 94,027 U.S. This makes the Seattle metro area the 15th largest metropolitan area in the United States, by population. About 4.01 million people were living in the Seattle metro area, which is more than half of Washington's total population in 2021 (about 7.72 million people). ![]() state of Washington includes the city of Seattle, King County, Snohomish County, and Pierce County within the Puget Sound region.
